Uttar Pradesh is located in North India and is bordered by Uttarakhand, Delhi, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. It also shares international borders with Nepal in the north. Its capital is located in the city of Lucknow. It is the most populous state of the country, with over 200 million inhabitants. The two main river systems of Uttar Pradesh are the Ganga and Yamuna, which meet at Allahabad.
Uttar Pradesh has witnessed the rule of many empires of ancient and medieval India, such as, Magadha, Mauryan, Nanda, Gupta, Rashtrakuta, Pala and Mughal. The state has many historical, religious and natural tourist destinations like Taj Mahal, Mathura, Meerut, Lucknow, Allahabad, Jhansi, Chitrakoot, Varanasi, Sarnath, Kushinagar and Kanpur. Allahabad is famous for the Kumbh Mela, which is held every 12 years and is attended by more than 10 million Hindu pilgrims. Sarnath is the place where Gautum Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, and he died at Kushinagar, hence both places are important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. One can also see the pillars of Ashoka and the Lion Capital of Ashoka in Sarnath. Uttar Pradesh is also home to three World Heritage Sites, namely, Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort.
When it comes to literature, Uttar Pradesh’s history is replete with great names like Maithili Sharan Gupt, Munshi Premchand, Suryakant Tripathi Nirala, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, subhadra Kumari Chauhan, and Hazari Prasad Dwivedi. In fact, several texts and hymns of Vedic literature were composed here. Many renowned musicians belong to Uttar Pradesh like Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Naushad Ali, Shubha Mudgal, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Ravi Shankar, Talat Mehmood and Begum Akhtar. The famous folk music forms are rasiya, qawwali and thumri. The classical dance form of Kathak owes its origin to Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow’s Awadhi cuisine is world famous because of dishes like, biryani, kebab, keema and nihari. Lucknow’s chaat and Benarsi Paan are also people’s favorites.
The state has an extensive variety of avifauna. Doves, peacocks, black partridge, quails, kingfishers, woodpeckers, parakeets, parrots and many more can be found in the various bird sanctuaries of Uttar Pradesh.
