Situated in the southernmost part of the Indian peninsula, the state of Tamil Nadu is surrounded by Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Puducherry. The Eastern Ghats lie to the north of Tamil Nadu, with Bay of Bengal to the east, Anamalai Hills, Kerala and Nilgiri to the west and Indian Ocean to the south. The sixth most populous state in India, Tamil Nadu’s capital city is Chennai. The Indian Peninsula’s southernmost tip, namely Kanyakumari, lies in the state of Tamil Nadu.
The state houses eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, along with various beaches, hill stations, temples, and other multi-religious pilgrimage sites. A wide variety of Biomes cover the Ghats, forests, beaches and estuaries of Tamil Nadu. Different varieties of flora and fauna inhabit these biomes, and in order to protect those various protected areas and biospheres have been created. Three such reserves are The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve and Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve. It has 5 declared national parks, namely in Gulf of Mannar, Mukurithi, Mudumalai, Anamalai and Guindy. It also has three tiger reserves namely Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Mukurthi National Park and Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve.
Tamil Nadu boasts of the presence of various Hindu Temples with Dravidian architecture. Many temples have been declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the temple and monuments of Mahabalipuram, Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Brihadishwara Temple and Airavateswara Temple. Most famous pilgrimage sites in Tamil Nadu are Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Rameshwaram, Palani and Kanchipuram. Famous for its beautiful sunrise, Kanyakumari is another popular tourist destination worth visiting to catch sight of the Thiruvalluvar’s statue and Vivekananda Rock Memorial. One can also visit one of the world’s longest beaches, Marina Beach, which is also in Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu is also known for its rich culture of music, dance and literature. The popular dance form of Bharatnatyam originated in Tamil Nadu and is still practiced here. Tamil architecture and Tanjore painting were also developed here and continue to flourish in the state. Pongal is among the most popular festivals celebrated in the state, celebrations for which go on for 4 days at a stretch.
