The largest state of the nation in terms of area, Rajasthan or the “Land of Kings” is located in the west, with majority of its area occupied by the “Great Indian Desert” or Thar Desert. It also happens to share a border with Pakistan, along the river valley of Sutlej-Indus.
Surrounded by India’s oldest mountain range of Aravalli, Rajasthan houses various forts and monuments that tell the tale of the majestic battles and magnificent rulers of the bygone era. Among other features, the ruins of Indus Valley Civilization at Kalibanga, the Dilwara Temples in Mount Abu, and two tiger reserves of Ranthambore National Park and Sariska Tiger Reserve are extremely famous in Rajasthan. The majestic Chittorgarh Fort is counted among the largest forts in Asia. The ancient Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur in pretty popular in the tourist circuit for housing the world’s biggest wheeled cannon, named Jaivana. The state gains its sacred stature from the holy Pushkar Lake which is flooded with thousands of devotees every year.
Rajasthan is also famous for its variety of delicacies, from sweet to savoury. Daal-bhaati, Pyaaj Kachori, Bajre ki Roti, Ghewar etc. are some of the sumptuous dishes that can be enjoyed in true Rajasthani style. Also, popular are the handicrafts of Rajasthan, which are a mélange of beautiful colors. Clothes in block prints, tie and dye prints and Zari embroidery are major exports products. Jodhpur’s Ghoomar Dance has gained international recognition, along with the Kalbeliya dance of Jaisalmer.
