The National Capital of the nation, New Delhi is practically the heart of the nation. A major metropolis, it is a unique mélange of culture, history, glamour and modernization. It is world’s second most populous city and is counted among the largest cities of the world in terms of area. It has the second highest GDP in the South, Central and West Asia. It also stands at No. 2 when it comes to the wealthiest states of India, preceded by Mumbai.
The foundation stone of the city was laid down in 1911 by the then Emperor of India, King George V. This city was planned and designed by two British architects, namely Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. Lord Irwin, the Viceroy of India in 1931 inaugurated the new capital. The structure of New Delhi is centered on two promenades, the Rajpath (that stretches from the Rashtrapati Bhavan to the India Gate) and the Janpath (begins at Connaught Circus, cutting Rajpath at right angles).
New Delhi is home to many historic sites and monuments, some of which are the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, India Gate, Jantar Mantar, Old Fort, Ugrasen Ki Baoli, Humayun’s Tomb, Safdurjung’s Tomb, Lodhi Gardens and Mughal Gardens. There are also various museums that are worth visiting like the National Museum, Nehru Planetarium, Shankar’s International Dolls Museum, National Museum of Natural History, National Rail Museum and National Gallery of Modern Art.
Many commercial centers and marketplaces have come up in the city, most popular of which are Connaught Place, Janpath, Sarojini Nagar, Dilli Haat, Greater Kailash, Chandni Chowk and Lajpat Nagar. From flea markets to big international brands to designer boutiques, you name it and Delhi has it. The construction of commercial shopping complexes like Select Citywalk Saket, DLF Promenade, Pacific Mall and many others are the new hangout places for people of all ages.
New Delhi is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural city and hence has various places of worship belonging to different religions. The popular ones are Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, Birla Mandir, Akshardham Temple, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Kalka Mandir, Cathedral Church of Redemption and Jama Masjid. Also, famous is the street food of Delhi; from the Paranthe wali gali in Chandni Chowk to the gol-gappas in Bengali Market to the modern-age restaurants scattered all over the city. New Delhi is worth a visit.
