Average Climate: The climate is similar to the climat of Kerala. March to May is the hottest period of the year. The temperature varies from 25oC to 35oC and humidity ranging from 70 -76 per cent for most of the year.
Best time to visit: Lakshadweep Islands can be visited throughout the year, although the best time is between October to March.
Lakshadweep is a group of islands in the Laccadive Sea. The word Lakshadweep means ‘a hundred thousand islands’ in Malayalam. They are one of the 7 union territories of India, and Kavaratti is the capital. As they are scarcely inhabited, several theories have been postulated by historians about the inhabitants of the islands. A Pallava inscription of 7th century AD refers to the islands as Dveepa Laksham and lists them as part of the Pallava domain. Local traditions and legends attribute the first settlement on these islands to the period of Cheraman Perumal, the last Chera king of Kerala.
Lakshadweep is a group of 39 coral reef islands, out of which 10 are inhabited. Laksadweep being one of the four coral reef regions of India housed a wide diversity of flora and fauna. Almost 93% of the population is Muslim and people are engaged in fishing and coconut cultivation. The cuisine is mostly coastal cuisine with coconut being the main element.
Tourism is a growing industry in these islands. Bangaram is projected as a major destination for international tourism. Marine fauna are plentiful. Water sports activities such as scuba diving, wind surfing, snorkeling, surfing, canoeing, water skiing, sport fishing and night-voyages into the sea are quite popular activities among tourists. Tourists flock to these islands throughout the year except during the South-west monsoon months when seas are extremely rough. October-May is the best time to visit the islands.
