Formerly known as Mysore, Karnataka lays in the south-west part of India, bordered by Arabian Sea and Laccadive Sea in the west, Andhra Pradesh in the east, Maharashtra in the north and Kerala in the south-west. The eighth largest state in India in terms of population, Karnataka’s capital city is Bengaluru. The state has two main river systems namely Krishna and Kaveri, along with their tributaries. The plains suddenly descend to dizzying majestic hills and then plunge into freefalling water, which finally turn into tranquil rivers.
The state is replete with various eco-tourism spots, which include Kudremukh, Agumbe and Madikeri. There are 5 national parks and 25 wildlife sanctuaries, most of popular of which are the Nagarhole National Park, Bandipur National Park and Bannerghatta National Park. Karnataka is famous for its various waterfalls, which includes the Jog Falls, India’s tallest single-tiered waterfall, Abbey Falls, Magod Falls and Unchalli Falls. Its coastline is dotted with many beautiful and serene beaches, like Malpe, Gokarna, Murudeshwara and Karwar. And recently, Karnataka has also emerged as a health care tourism destination with various alternative therapies and treatments which not only local but international tourists are also benefitting from.
Owing to its rich historic tales, Karnataka houses an array of beautifully sculptured temples and other places of worship, and has the second highest number of nationally-protected monuments. Some of the famous heritage sites in Karnataka are, the ruins of Vijayanagara Empire at Hampi, rock-cut temples in Aihole, cave temples in Badami, the Hoysala Temples, Gol Gumbaz and Gomateshwara Bahubali’s monolith. Some of the famous Hindu temples in the state that are worth visiting include names like Marikamba Temple, Udupi Sri Krishna Matha, Sharadamba Temple and many more.
Karnataka is a mélange of different religious and linguistic ethnicities which have greatly contributed to its colorful and vibrant culture. It is known for the famous dance drama theatrical form of Yakshagana. Bharatnatyam is another famous folk dance that is a popular performing art in this state. Karnataka holds a very special place in the world of Indian classical music, with contributions of Carnatic and Hindustani music.
