Locally known as the Jewel of the West, Gujarat lies in the western part of India and shares it borders with Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. It also shares its international borders with Pakistan. The state’s capital city is Gandhinagar, and Ahmedabad is the largest city. The three major rivers flowing through the state are Sabarmati, Tapi and Narmada. Sabarmati is the biggest river of Gujarat. The Arabian Sea forms the state’s western coast.
Gujarat has four national parks and 21 sanctuaries, most popular of which are Blackbuck National Park, Narara Marine National Park, Porbandar Bird Sanctuary, and Wild Ass Wildlife Sanctuary. Gujarat is also the only home for Asiatic Lions, and the only natural habitat for lions outside of Africa. Gir Forest National Park is the place to catch sight of the King of the Jungle. Some of the major mountain ranges of India pass through Gujarat, like the Aravalli, Sahyadri, Saputara and Vindhya. Girnar is the tallest peak in the state. Various fossilized remains of dinosaurs have also been discovered in Balasinor area of Kheda district. This has triggered ‘Dinosaur Tourism’ in the state. People from the nation and other parts of the world are coming to Gujarat to see these remains and excavation sites.
Gujarat has been one of the major centers of the Indus Valley Civilization, the remains of which can still be sighted in the present day state. It has also witnessed Mughal rule and Maratha rule, the influences of which can be spotted at various places in Gujarat. And lastly, it was ruled by the British. It is also the birthplace of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel and Mahatma Gandhi. There are various museums that are worth a visit during your tour of Gujarat, namely, Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery, Sabarmati Ashram, Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum and Calico Museum of Textiles.
Gujarat is famous for its colorful and rich culture – beautiful handicrafts, literature, festivals. Bhavai is a folk musical performance, native to Gujarat, and the Gujarati theatre owes much of its recognition to it. Gujarati food, considered to be one of the healthiest cuisines in India, is primarily vegetarian.
