Located near the state of Gujarat is the second smallest Union Territory of India, named Daman & Diu. While Daman lies on the coast of Gujarat, Diu is located on the Kathiawar Peninsula, bordered by the Arabian Sea in the west.
Its history dates back to the 13th Century, during which time the region was under the administration of the Chowda Rajputs. It was then taken over by the Muslim rulers, who ruled it for almost 200 years, before it was taken over by the Portuguese. Finally, the rulers of Gujarat annexed the region from the Portuguese.
The cultural heritage of Daman & Diu is a blend of Portuguese, tribal and Indian elements. The traditions and customs of this region hold similarity with that of Gujarat, and the festivals are celebrated here with great pomp and show.
Some of the monuments and places of tourist interest in this area are namely, the Fort of St. Jerome, the Church of Our Lady of Rosary, the Light House and Gandhi Park at Daman jetty, Devka Beach, Jampore Beach, lake garden of Satya Nagar Udyan and Zampa Waterfalls.
