Average Climate: Assam has Tropical Monsoon Rainforest Climate. The maximum temperature in summer is 35–38 °C and minimum in winter is 6–8 °C. Spring (March to April) and Autumn (September to Oct) are generally pleasant with moderate rainfall and temperature.
Best time to visit: Assam can be visited throughout the year, but it is experienced best during Spring and Autumn.
Being one of the seven sister states of India, Assam is known for its scenic beauty. Located in the north-eastern region of India, it shares international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh. Assam is characterised by its topography, wildlife, culture and the world famous Assam Tea. Due to Tropical Monsoon Rainforest Climate, Assam faces high rainfall and high humidity, and thus the best time to visit Assam is between October to April, with bright sunny days and cool nights.
It is a hybrid of many cultures which is evident in the various temples and monuments which are spread all over the state. Some of them are, Kamkhya Temple, Umananda Temple (situated at Peacock Island in the middle of Brahmaputra river), Nabgraha Temple. Other architectural marvels of Assam include, Madan Kamdev, Poa-Mecca (a mosque, for which it is held that it has one-fourth the sanctity of Mecca), Da-Parbatia and Agnigarh.
Bihu is the most important festival of Assam and is celebrated with great zeal. The traditional Bihu dance performed during the festival is a sight to watch. The Assamese folk music is absolutely captivating. One of most renowned music maestro, Bhupen Hazarika’s music is greatly influenced by the folk music of Assam. One can also find traces of Assamese music is the works of many other popular musicians like Jayanta Hazarika, Pratima Barua Pandey and Bishnu Prasad Rabha.
Considered among the richest biodiversity regions of the world, it has numerous wildlife sanctuaries that are home to a wide range of flora and fauna. Two of the most prominent sanctuaries are the Kaziranga National Park and the Manas Wildlife Sanctuary, both of which have been declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Kaziranga National Park is famous for being the habitat of the fast vanishing species of the one-horned rhinoceros.
The Asamese cuisine is also something to look forward to. The dishes are comparatively less spicy than other Indian dishes and thus make a perfect meal for tourists who aren’t used to spicy food. Fish curry, known as ‘Machor Tonga’, is the most famous dish from Assam. The famous dessert, Khar, made by banana peels is another delicacy that must be tried.
