Best time to visit: Andaman Islands can be visited throughout the year, The forest is lush green & the water falls are at their peak during May to December so it is the best time for nature loving tourists. December to April is the best time for divers & October till March is the best season for bird watchers.
An archipelago of 572 small islands, Andaman & Nicobar Islands lie in the Bay of Bengal between India and Myanmar. Port Blair is the capital city of Andaman Islands, while Car Nicobar is the capital of Nicobar Islands. One can find inhabitation in about 34 of the many small islands of this territory. The Ten Degree Channel, a 150km wide stretch of sea, separates the Andaman region from Nicobar Islands. Indira Point, the southernmost point of India, is also located in this union territory.
Its pristine islands and exotic beaches make this place a favorite among local and international tourists. Its tropical rainforests are home to exotic floral and faunal species from India, Myanmar and Malaysia. Around 50 species of mammals can be found in the forested area of these islands. Large numbers of saltwater crocodiles also inhabit the region. Also found are 270 species of avifauna and about 255 species of butterflies and moths. The area is also prized for good quality sea-food like shellfish, scallops, mussels, oysters and clams.
Apart from being bestowed with natural beauty, the islands also house the historic Cellular Jail, a colonial prison built in the British era to exile political prisoners. Today the prison serves as a national memorial, where people can see various artifacts belonging to the colonial era.
